Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) head coach Daniel Vettori Blames toss and a shaky start as key reasons for their defeat against Mumbai Indians (MI) in their latest IPL 2025 clash. Vettori admitted that losing the toss put SRH at a disadvantage, especially on a pitch that favored batting under lights. Despite a few positive individual performances, Vettori emphasized that SRH needs to improve their execution from the very beginning if they want to bounce back in upcoming matches.
Daniel Vettori Blames Toss, Batting Woes in SRH’s Loss to MI

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) head coach Daniel Vettori Blames toss, changing pitch conditions, and a poor start with the bat as major reasons behind their heavy defeat to Mumbai Indians in IPL 2025. Playing at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, SRH were bundled out after losing four wickets inside the powerplay and never recovered, eventually suffering their sixth defeat in just eight games this season.
Daniel Vettori Blames toss, he admitted that SRH would have preferred to bowl first, just like MI did after winning the toss, as the pitch turned out to be vastly different from the high-scoring surfaces seen in previous matches. “We wanted to bowl first because the conditions were vastly different. It wasn’t a 250-260 wicket. That assessment early on was crucial, and unfortunately, we were on the wrong side of it,” Vettori explained.
The Kiwi coach also emphasized that SRH’s game plan to capitalize during the powerplay backfired when Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma fell early. With the team at 24 for 4, recovering to a competitive total became nearly impossible. He expressed disappointment over the team’s inability to build partnerships and shoulder responsibility in difficult situations.
“Our top-order collapse left us chasing the game, and we haven’t seen enough players step up to build partnerships when needed,” Vettori said. He also lamented the pressure put on incoming batters due to early dismissals and stressed the need for a more composed and adaptive approach as the tournament reaches its critical phase.
